Natural Ways to Support Your Metabolism
Metabolism isn't as mysterious as it sounds
"Boosting metabolism" is one of the most marketed but least understood phrases in the weight-loss space. Your metabolic rate is largely determined by body size, muscle mass, age, and genetics — factors you can influence only modestly, and mostly over time, not with a single product.
What actually supports metabolic health
- Strength training. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. Regular resistance training is one of the few evidence-backed ways to meaningfully influence resting metabolic rate over time.
- Adequate protein intake. Protein has a higher "thermic effect" than fat or carbohydrates, meaning your body burns more calories digesting it — and it supports the muscle mass that drives metabolic rate.
- Consistent sleep. Poor sleep is linked in research to disrupted hunger hormones (ghrelin and leptin) and reduced insulin sensitivity — both relevant to metabolic and weight outcomes.
- Regular movement, not just workouts. Non-exercise activity — walking, standing, daily movement — makes up a meaningful share of daily calorie expenditure for most people.
- Not under-eating drastically. Extreme calorie restriction can lower metabolic rate over time as the body adapts to conserve energy — one reason crash diets often backfire.
Where ingredients like green tea and cayenne fit in
Compounds like EGCG and capsaicin are associated with modest, temporary increases in calorie expenditure — real, but small compared to the effect of the fundamentals above. They're reasonable as a small supporting piece, not a replacement for them.
The bottom line
If "supporting metabolism" is the goal, the biggest levers are strength training, protein intake, sleep, and consistent movement — with supplements playing a supporting, not starring, role.
